Thoughts and reflections of those of us who make up Dijital Fix

I can’t stop laughing

Seriously. The Oatmeal has provided me with hours of funny comic reading. Check it out.

Here are two of my favorite comics by The Oatmeal:

I just found an awesome mix from the artist Autechre, an English electronic music duo (comprised of Sean Booth and Rob Brown). They formed in 1987, and this song is from 1994- but it’s amazing. Take a listen (Autechre – Montreal):

So tonight at CULTUREfix is the event WORDS + MUSIC. 6 Musicians and 6 Poets will team up for a night of musical roulette. The audience will role two giant dice, randomly pairing one poet and one musician for a night of improvisational duets. Who knows what will happen… More info here. Starts at 9pm tonight.

I really like the Kikkerland Reflect Mouse Pads we sell. I bought a few for my apartment and they are badass. They stay in place, they look awesome, and it’s specifically made for laser optical mouses (perfect for my new Mac mouse). They’re super cheap too, like $6.99. Here’s what we got:

Alright people, that’s all for me.

Exactly what I prefer

It really puts me in my place when I find great art I’m inspired by. I like pieces that make you think, but I really love work that just takes you to another world. Back in my West Coast days, all of my friends were up to something. We all had avenues we were heading down in all different directions. Every once in a while, we would meet up and talk about our so-called success in the City of Angels. Even if it wasn’t much, we rooted eachother on over beer.

In particular, my friend Chris was studying film at a reputable school downtown. He started losing interest in film as he gained a fascination with still photography. Before I moved to New York City, I had the opportunity to stay with Chris during the summer he made his transition.

His work was good. He borrowed his friends professional camera, and relied on his other close friend and (well-known) photographer Adam Hendershott for mentorship. He soaked up everything he could to make his work stand out on its own. He practiced on his friends for free, and built up an impressive portfolio.

I just recently visited his website and was pretty astounded. Chris made it happen. I asked him if I could share his work on The Daily Fix. I think it’s important to showcase underground artists. We all know it’s the underground work that influences mainstream culture and trend.

Chris Wayne Photography has conjured up quite the name for itself in the last three years. I would say his photography is the kind of art that takes you to another world. Exactly what I prefer. Go Chris.

You know nothing about Joshua

I realized last night no one knows anything about me on this here blog.

My name is Joshua. I am a 22 year old Pisces, which means I am emotionally driven and overly sensitive. Right after high school in my small Ohio town, I moved to Chicago where I worked with a national community service organization called City Year. I then moved to Los Angeles to help found the organization there. Between the gangs in East LA and the poverty in Skid Row, my work was cut out for me. Chicago had a few rough patches as well. City Year was a challenge and I loved it.

After City Year, I studied music at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, that’s right, I’m better than you because I lived in the trash-infested dirt hole tourists venture off to, and quickly feel let down. Hollywood is horrible. I also interned in Technical Production at The Kodak Theatre, which was an interesting experience full of celebrities, stage-moms, and people who thought they were celebrities.

I transferred campuses and moved to NYC a little over a year ago, and graduated in February. Now, I work full-time for Dijital Fix, and also write & record music. I am a singer/songwriter/pianist- check out my site. I come in early to work to play the piano at CULTUREfix, and after I work, I go home, drink, and play more. It’s a marvelous life I live. Here’s a video of me covering a Spice Girls song on the piano.

How would I describe my style?
I just went for a walk to grab a coffee, and a group of young people called me Pee-wee Herman. If by Pee-wee Herman they mean attractive, young, clean-cut lad- then yes that’s me. Otherwise f%$# off. Pee-wee didn’t wear ties and colorful plaid arrangements.

And music?
I like acoustic sound. Piano. Guitar. Simple drums. On the other end of the spectrum, I like produced electronic music with good synth and complex rhythmic personality. I like everything from Coldplay to Lady Gaga to Daft Punk to Tracy Chapman to Telepopmusik and everything in-between. Us youth, we like to just say we listen to everything, I know.

Joshua, what are your views on life?
I really just don’t care, anymore.

Most importantly, what is your favorite food?
I like fried chicken and meatloaf, but being vegan makes eating that a little difficult. I enjoy vegetable sushi, pad thai, vegan pizza, and rabbit food. I love beer. I also LOVE orange juice.

So now when you see posts by a guy named Joshua, you will have a little background on who I am. Find me on facebook. Come visit me at the LES store; theres a good chance I’ll be there. Send me photos, I’ll put ‘em on the blog:
joshua@dijitalfix.com.

God is crying

It’s quite the rainy day here in New York City. So rainy, that I saw a woman wildly running in the middle of the street outside the store. People are interesting.

I found it fitting on a day like today to share some umbrella etiquette: NYC’s Official Rules Of Inclement Weather Umbrella Etiquette (on NYC Best of Craigslist).

I updated my Facebook App on my iPhone and discovered Places. Similar to Foursquare, you can check in and let everyone know where you are. I think it’s pretty cool, but it looks like some people out there oppose it: http://www.boycottfacebookplaces.com/. I was excited to add Dijital Fix (LES) to the database.

So I just read Apple is applying for a patent to wipe and brick jailbroken devices. I have an iPhone 3G, and when I updated the firmware to the most recent round, my iPhone literally turned into a paperweight. My heavens, that little sucker was slow until I… woopsies, next topic!

I recently moved to Greenpoint from the Lower East Side and I love it. I have found so many great places in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, so I thought I would share a few with you. And here they are:

  1. Deals

    680 Meeker Avenue – Brooklyn, NY 11222 – (212) 213-2433

I live directly across the street from this megastore of amazingness. I have saved SO much money at this place. From cleaning supplies to food to fricken cool photos of baby Jesus (that are on my wall now), you can find anything here for an awesome price.
  2. Vinnies Pizzeria

    148 Bedford Avenue – Brookyln, NY 11211 – (718) 782-7078
Absolutely delicious. omg omg omg. They’ve even got (a lot of) vegan options that make my hair stand tall. I like to order a pizza, walk to the nearest deli, grab a 6-pack, then go back an INDULGE.
  3. Boneshakers

    134 Kingsland Avenue – Brooklyn, NY 11222 (718) 963-0656
What a perfect little Brooklyn cafe. ALL of the food is great tasting, and they are very generous with the servings! I guarantee you’ll enjoy Boneshakers!

Come keep me company if your around the Lower East Side today; bring your umbrella (but don’t forget your manners, New Yorkers) ;)

A moment of silence for the TMA-1s

The TMA-1s are a special product.

Holding them, you know this…  but its not until you put them on that it becomes so personal, so rich and warm, the pressure astounding, so balanced and so wise, summoning an ancient alien force like its namesake…

Yes its true, TMA-1 is a direct reference to the Arthur C. Clark sci-fi novel and kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey”. TMA-1 stands for Tyco-Magnetic Anomaly 1,  the stark black monolith that appears in the story throughout the millennia. The monolith represents eternity; a time-space continuum with unlimited power; its epic inhumanity radiating throughout the universe. No cooler name for a pair of headphones exists as far as the Discovery One could take you. Just try listening to Also Sprach Zarathustra through these cans, the glistening string arpeggios and brassy stabs have never been more defined.

What you might not know yet about these headphones is that they have been in the research and development phase for over two years. Working with some of the worlds’ top DJs and electronic musicians (including 2 Many DJs, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Hot Chip, James Murphy, Kode 9, Michael Mayer, Matthew Dear, MSTRKRFT, RJD2, Teki Lalex, Tiga & many others), Aiaiai calibrated the TMA-1s to the extreme precision that the professionals need, while retaining a design standard that novists can still be easily seduced by.

The durability is also fascinating; its rubber-coated matte black band can be stretched to its limits, almost completely straight. The cups can be easily removed and replaced, coming packaged with both faux-leather and foam cups, giving you the option for the ‘higher-pressure’ or ‘less fatiguing’ modes of listening. If either were ever to wear out, they can be easily replaced by the manufacturer. Additionally, the cable plugs directly into the cups with a standard 1/8th inch mini plug, meaning any cable can be switched out to preferance or the included cable could easily be replaced if it ever were to short out.

The namesake, design and durability of this product are important talking points, but what it really comes down to is the sound. The world of hi-fi headphone enthusiasts is is critical and nasty; they are quick to judge any new no-names by holding them up to a long-existing standard of expensive, time-tested and highly regarded headphones. Their excitement, however, could not be felt more about the TMA-1s… here is what they are saying over and head-fi.com, the net’s most hostile hi-fi forum:

“…each day seems to just get better and better. Not sure if it’s my ears adjusting or the drivers relaxing ..or both.. but it’s all good.”

“…The TMA’s are punchy and accurate delivering kick drums in a clean and precise manner that didn’t abuse the range or influence the mids/highs. The sound stage was much wider than the 700s with much greater depth and tonality…”

“…The result is a product that’s perfectly refined, instantly iconic, and quite possibly, essential…”

And its true, these headphones sound incredible. At high volumes the pressure is powerful, delivering your music by literally pushing it into your head. Its fun and surprising hearing music like this, the smile I see on the faces of customers trying them on indicates a sort of novelty in their performance. At lower volumes, the TMA-1s become delicate, and the precision and separation become more evident. The bass sounds like bass, which may seem obvious but many new headphone producers push the bass frequencies so hard that they sound reverberated, washed out or dull… leaving the mids and highs to disappear in the cloud of bass. Here, the bass sounds like bass, tight, punchy, warm and isolated, while the mids punch and the highs soar, delivering a clarity and richness in harmonics unmatched by its contemporaries. The tonal coloration is invisible, happening in the background and allowing the natural mixes of your music to determine the equalization.

Until tomorrow, Sunday August 22nd, we’re offering the TMA-1s at their pre-order/introductory price of $179 (15% off from the retail price at $199). Please, even if not to buy a pair, come in to either location and try them out, share with us the euphoria that the TMA-1s produce.

All goosed-up with nowhere to go

Mike Dubin, from the KRock radio shows “Domestic Disturbance” and “B-Local”, puts together a mix every month which are quickly becoming highlights of the month. Check out his Mid-August mix here (I heard Mid-May is pretty good too):

This month also includes a new song by Bad Books which is Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra’s new side project, definitely worth checking out. They are also playing their first show ever at CMJ this year. Speaking of CMJ:

Superglued is giving away Free CMJ badges if you blog about the summer concerts you have attended. You know you were all at the !!! show at the Waterfront, write about it! You might just win AND you could even be crowned NYC SUMMER MUSIC JUNKIE and win a whole year pass to shows at the Brooklyn Bowl. Not bad for logging shows you are already going to- right?

Amazing Thermonuclear Chiptunes

[HTML1]

Ever wonder what the sound of the thermonuclear arms testing and near-world-destruction would sound like?  Artist Isao Hashimoto created this wonderful video demonstrating the time and location of each nuclear test over a 50-year period with each country’s test explosion set to a different note.  The result is a somewhat calming, yet markedly unsettling tune that is quite mesmerizing during this 15-minute time-lapse of the 53-year period from 1945-1998.  The calming yet eerie graphics remind you of an 80′s-era atari game while instilling a sense of silent fear that I’m sure was ever-present during those times.

Especially interesting is the “copycat” effect in the early 50s between the U.S.S.R. and U.S.A.
