New products that Dijital Fix will be carrying in the near future.

Spring for some Field Notes

It’s that time of year again, the time when Field Notes releases their fresh colorpacks designed for the season at hand.  What do we have this time?  The coolest pack of Field Notes I’ve seen them put out yet.  For the same usual price of $9.95, you get a 3-pack of graph paper field notes, contained within a manilla envelope inspired by a seed packet.  That’s not all, folks.  This cheerful edition also contains not only the cheerful sunny yellow memo books, each printed with a different vibrant ink color, but they’re packed in a string-tied, top-loading kraft envelope that is inspired by vintage American seed packaging.  Well, actually it is a vintage American seed package, because aside from the three memo books, each packet of sunshine includes Marigold seeds of the “Crackerjack” variety direct from Bay City, Michigan along with notes on growing them!  Order now!

Joey Roth @ Dijital Fix

Joey Roth has made quite a name for himself.  First with the design for his gorgeous Sorapot, and then with the interesting way he went about presenting his company at the New York International Gift Fair.  He brought nothing but some tools and his products, and repurposed other people’s garbage at the show into a rather fantastic-looking booth (which I saw for myself).  He recently released his Ceramic Speakers, which were announced some time ago, but only available recently.  We decided to go ahead and stock his products, as we’ve always been admirers and followers of his designs, and are proud to have them all on display in the store.  Come by and give the Ceramic Speakers a listen, or feel up a Sorapot, because we know you’ve seen them on a million blogs, but not in person.  For a good audiophile review on the speakers, check this out.

New Scandinavian Cans by Urbanears

Urbanears

We first saw the press shots for Urbanears a few weeks ago and were blown away by the imaginative scenes created from a simple concept of color. The simple, uncluttered concept is a very accurate portrayal of their actual product, which we just received yesterday. A simple colored box, devoid of excessive branding.  A pair of headphones that is pure and simply: just headphones.  This is not to say that they are too focused on just a simple branding approach (they are Scandinavian, after all). The headphones themselves are great.

The Plattan headphones sound excellent, and the details which make them even better are so simple in form that you would have expected them to be commonplace already, like an extra jack on the headphones that allows you to plug a friends headphones into your headphones to share your music.  They call this the “Zound Plug”.  It’s a brilliant idea, and amazingly simple.  It dawned on me that not only is this jack useful for a friend, but if you ever end up breaking your cord on accident (hey, it happens to us all), it actually allows you to keep using your headphones by simply plugging a male-to-male mini jack into the socket, and you can keep on rocking.

They also fold up nicely, and have a very solid feel when clicking into place, which feels like a magnetic lock, but I haven’t disassembled them to check if that’s the case. The fabric cord which matches the fabric-encased headband is a very nice touch, and the cord has a built-in microphone and click-button for iPhone/BlackBerry/Droid usage.

These headphones were truly designed to meet the needs of today’s casual headphone user, and at a great price ($60), available in a plethora of colors, these guys are highly recommended.  In stock now, online and in-store.

AiAiAi Tracks Are In!

AiAiAi Tracks Headphone

Okay, there is no headphone company out there that is more with it than AiAiAi.  There are a few headphones out there now that are clear homages to skinny, minimal old school Walkman headphones: Koss Portapro, WeSC Pick-Ups – and of course there are also the authenticists I’ve seen around that rock the actual Walkman headphones.  AiAiAi schools all of those guys and takes sound+design+pizazz to the next level!

In collaboration with Danish design studio, Kilo Design, they took the rad 80s look and added their own spins on it that would make even Marty McFly covet a pair.  You know how when you normally get headphones, all you do is take it out of the box and that’s it?  No fun with customization.  With these, it comes disassembled (in a fun way) and you get to put it together yourself: the clean, brushed steel brace + 3 sets of sliders of various colors, to connect the ear cups to the brace + ear cups themselves.  Included is a drawstring carrying case, because  these headphones are just that easy to take apart and throw into a purse or murse.  Another important feature of the Tracks is the built-in microphone for iPhone users, available in 3 out of the 6 available colorways.

Specs:

Driver: 40mm

Plug: 3.5mm

Impedance: 32 Ohm

Sensitivity: 112 +/- 3dB

Max. Input: 40 mW

Mic Operating Voltage: 3-10V

Bang & Olufsen vs. WeSC Alp Horns

B&O U70

Just a quick note here of something interesting I came across.  You know the WeSC Alp Horn headphones we’ve been carrying for a while?  Well, I just came across a photo by Jonathan Mutch on Flickr of the B&O U70 headphones.  Look familiar?  Hmm WeSC, not to bash you, but looks like your design wasn’t so original after all.  I’m a big design geek, so I’m more mad at myself for not recognizing that earlier…

Eskuché Mé & Turn It Up!

Control Cream

Fresh off the truck, we just received our giant shipment of Eskuché headphones, and I must say, after giving them a try, I was definitely not expecting them to sound as good as they do, considering their price ($55).

Far better than other “fashion” headphones at their price-point, I’m giving these a very solid recommendation based on sound quality, and they look great to boot.  ALSO, all models come with a replaceable cord (which, as an expert in this field, I can tell you is the main area headphones die) that comes with one TWO cords.  One of them allows you to use your iPhone/BlackBerry with a microphone and call/send/end/skip track button.  How cool!

You can buy them here, or come in to the store and give them a listen.

Superheadz Digital Harinezumi Camera

Digital Harinezumi

From a well-worded Boing Boing post:

I tread a fine line with it comes to faux retro camera hipsterism: I think buying old film cameras, while a perfectly fair choice for some, forgoes most of the convenience, opportunity for learning, and dare I say magic of the digital camera. On the other hand, my white is on my computer and iPhone adding washed out filters and faux vignettes all the time. I’ll give up fidelity and authenticity, but never ease of use.

So what to do about the “Digital Harinezumi” by Superheadz? The Japanese analog cameramaker has made a tiny digital (its first), complete with an LCD screen—that it won’t let you use when snapping a picture, forcing you instead to frame the shot with a plastic viewfinder like the one found on old 110 “spy” cameras. (The Harinezumi looks quite a bit like those very cameras, one of which I owned after seeing Bill Cosby use one in Leonard: Part VI.)

The washed out look from leaky plastic cameras is still there. There’s a physical spring-loaded switch that mimics a film camera’s controls. It even shoots video that harkens to 8mm film—by leaving out the sound.

It’s sort of what we’ve come to, the last option in a market oversaturated with inexpensive point-and-shoots capable of crystal-clear snapshots: when you can no longer go forward, you have to go back. But at least Superheadz remembered to keep it convenient, with a microSD card slot for transferring up to 4GB of your 2-megapixel images and VGA movies onto your computer and the internet.

Well, we’ve got it in stock now, along with a whole slew of their other cameras and books.  As the first U.S. retailer of the BlackBird, Fly when it came out last year, we’re proud to have it.  You can see a video of our new store layout shot with the Digital Harinezumi below.
