Random thoughts and rants.

All goosed-up with nowhere to go

Mike Dubin, from the KRock radio shows “Domestic Disturbance” and “B-Local”, puts together a mix every month which are quickly becoming highlights of the month. Check out his Mid-August mix here (I heard Mid-May is pretty good too):

This month also includes a new song by Bad Books which is Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra’s new side project, definitely worth checking out. They are also playing their first show ever at CMJ this year. Speaking of CMJ:

Superglued is giving away Free CMJ badges if you blog about the summer concerts you have attended. You know you were all at the !!! show at the Waterfront, write about it! You might just win AND you could even be crowned NYC SUMMER MUSIC JUNKIE and win a whole year pass to shows at the Brooklyn Bowl. Not bad for logging shows you are already going to- right?

[caption id="attachment_1957" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Look, it's me in a Hipstamatic photo. I'm all goosed-up for their next show at CULTUREfix August 24th-29th."][/caption]

And for the closer of this weeks fun stuff: funny pictures of cats dressed as famous people.

Marty Markowitz Renames Bridges “WiFi” and “Broadband”

After I saw this, I wasn’t sure it was real, but checking it out, it appears to be true!  Marty Markowitz, in a bid to get Google’s attention and bring their 1-Gigabit/Second Fiber-to-the-home network to Brooklyn as their first test community!  Go Marty!

While I’m not exactly how long those names will stick, I hope people occasionally tell cabbies to “take the WiFi Bridge and exit at Broadway”.  Brilliant move, Marty, this might just get their attention so we can finally kick Time Warner and their crappy service to the curb!  If you haven’t heard about this yet, best thing for you to do would be to nominate our community (Brooklyn/Greenpoint), oh nevermind, it’s too late, deadline was yesterday!  Well, the next best thing would be to get down on your knees and pray, join the official facebook page, and only use google as a search engine so that they see we’re loyal!

Traffic Sign Near Atlantic Yards Reads “Fuck Ratner”

This is the kind of hardware hacking that is really exciting.  Can we hack the traffic lights over there as well to stop the construction vehicles?

The title says it all, but here’s the Post’s cheeky take on it:

An opponent of the Atlantic Yards hacked into a digital traffic sign on Flatbush Avenue near developer Bruce Ratner’s Atlantic Yards mega-project on Tuesday, manipulating it to flash the message, “F—k Ratner.”Instead of warning motorists about traffic pattern changes from the construction of the Barclays Center a few blocks away, the sign, near the corner of St. Marks Avenue, flashed its obscenity from about 8 am until about 10 am, when it was disabled.

While they won’t show you the photo, we, of course, will! Major credit to duelin markers on Flickr for snapping this pic. And if you’re curious on how to do that to your very own street sign, here’s a step-by-step guide.

Depression, Recession, or sales tactic?

I saw this sign today and just had to mention how weird I thought it was that it was permanently installed and well made with neon lights, etc instead of just a vinyl banner. They either pulled this outta the basement from the crash in the 70′s, 80′s, 90′s…or the dot com bust…or they….oh shit, I just invalidated my point.

Spying on my laptop

MacGuyver
So here’s an interesting situation…my laptop was stolen out of my apartment this past Monday. Thankfully I have insurance and I use Time Machine through my Apple Time Capsule (highly, highly recommended, BTW) so once I get the settlement I’m not really out anything except the hassle of it all.  But here’s the interesting part…I didn’t really think of this until today when I was screwing around with google history and I noticed some strange behavior that happened yesterday when I was not on my username at work…a whole slew of google searches for K-Mart locations in manhattan, Targets in Manhattan, Stationary stores in Manhattan and where to watch free movies online… HMMMMM!

Tom Hanks to Be Responsible for the Big Bang

0610026_02-a4-at-144-dpi

Yes, Tom Hanks has been chosen by CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) to be present to restart the Large Hadron Collider in September 2009.

I can’t believe I just typed that sentence.

It’s completely true, though.  Okay, so for those of you that don’t remember back in September 2008, the guys at CERN got the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) going, and we were all very excited, but then a few days later, there was a faulty electrical connection between two superconducting bending magnets (oops..!) so they had to shut the project down for some $28 million repairs.

Okay guys, so I had this problem where I don’t understand complicated scientific information unless it’s explained to me in rap form.  But you know what?  That’s okay, because there’s this instructional rap video about the LHC, produced by CERN staff, just for people like me:

So, why Tom Hanks?  Due to the success of the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code, the prequel, Angels & Demons, is now heading for the big screen.  Starring, of course, Tom Hanks.  Angels & Demons involves Hanks’ character, the Vatican, and some antimatter stolen from CERN.

A Romantic Ride Through Central Park Might Just Become Way Cooler

PETA hates it.  Environmentalists hate it.  Most New Yorkers hate it.

centralpark10

Since 1947, Central Park has been offering horse-drawn carriage rides to tourists and cliché-seeking couples alike.  So, no, this is not some sacred or authentic tradition that has been going on since the actual era of the horse-drawn buggy.  This is a silly tourism gimmick that has been mistreating horses and stinking up Central Park since the end of World War II.  I remember, at the age of 12, when my mother and I had to entertain some cousins that were visiting from overseas, she thought it might be nice to go on a carriage ride through the Park.  And it cost $60 for 20 minutes.  How about not?

But wait – there’s good news!!!!  Now, in the age of green tourism, NY Councilman Daniel Garodnick is proposing a replacement idea : eco-friendly replicas of the Model T Ford.  Suh-weeeet!  Next step – getting rid of horse-drawn carriages.  It’s pretty close to happening.
