We first saw the press shots for Urbanears a few weeks ago and were blown away by the imaginative scenes created from a simple concept of color. The simple, uncluttered concept is a very accurate portrayal of their actual product, which we just received yesterday. A simple colored box, devoid of excessive branding. A pair of headphones that is pure and simply: just headphones. This is not to say that they are too focused on just a simple branding approach (they are Scandinavian, after all). The headphones themselves are great.
The Plattan headphones sound excellent, and the details which make them even better are so simple in form that you would have expected them to be commonplace already, like an extra jack on the headphones that allows you to plug a friends headphones into your headphones to share your music. They call this the “Zound Plug”. It’s a brilliant idea, and amazingly simple. It dawned on me that not only is this jack useful for a friend, but if you ever end up breaking your cord on accident (hey, it happens to us all), it actually allows you to keep using your headphones by simply plugging a male-to-male mini jack into the socket, and you can keep on rocking.
They also fold up nicely, and have a very solid feel when clicking into place, which feels like a magnetic lock, but I haven’t disassembled them to check if that’s the case. The fabric cord which matches the fabric-encased headband is a very nice touch, and the cord has a built-in microphone and click-button for iPhone/BlackBerry/Droid usage.
These headphones were truly designed to meet the needs of today’s casual headphone user, and at a great price ($60), available in a plethora of colors, these guys are highly recommended. In stock now, online and in-store.
